Iknow's User Centered Design (UCD) Framework provides a structure for conducting user interface design, software product design, and usability activities. The UCD Framework is based on the LUCID Framework (Logical User Centered Interaction Design) developed by Cognetics Corporation.

Specifically, the framework:

The UCD Framework has six steps, each with its own set of business objectives, design activities, and tools. The steps are illustrated in the Exhibit.

Iknow's User Centered Design Framework

In the Envision Step...

We assemble a multi-disciplinary project team. It is extremely important to have all the stakeholders (business, user and IT) represented on the team, especially at this early stage. Together, we state and align business, user, and IT goals. Team members develop a common understanding of the product concept as well as the project objectives and limitations.

The Envision Step is complete when all stakeholders and team members understand their roles and the project vision, and the roles and vision have been documented.

In the Discovery Step...

We analyze users, tasks, and information. Based on that analysis, we develop personas to profile users, and scenarios to show their tasks. High-level requirements are derived from the personas and scenarios, and we revise the usability goals.

The Discovery Step is complete when personas, scenarios, and high-level requirements are approved.

In the Design Foundation Step...

We establish the basic concept of the user interface, its objects, and its metaphors. Navigation, basic screen types, and the mental model underlying the user interface are documented. At this stage, a key-screen prototype is built and tested.

The Design Foundation Step is complete when executive management has approved the design direction embodied in the key screen prototype.

In the Design Detail Step...

We complete the user interface design, producing specifications for developers. Specifications include a style guide, screen layouts, and element-by-element specifications.

The Design Detail Step is complete when specifications are complete, reviewed, and turned over to the developers.

In the Build Step...

We support developers and respond to last minute design issues.

The Build Step is complete when development is finished and the product is tested and ready for release.

In the Release Step...

We design and test the out-of-the-box user experience. The end result (product) is evaluated, as is the UCD process itself. Lessons learned are documented.

The Release Step is complete when all measurement activities are complete and any remaining usability issues have been transitioned to new projects.

Productivity Benefits

Projects that are designed and managed using UCD principles yield significant increases in productivity. In one case, a call center cut their training time by 87 percent and increased throughput by 10%. Some of the potential productivity benefits include:
